Basketball statistics definitions

+/-

Plus/minus. Indicates the difference between a player's team's total score and their opponent's while the player is on court.

AST%

Assist percentage. Estimates the percentage of his team's field goals a player assists while on court.

%As 3P

Percentage of a player's assists that result in a three-pointer, out of his total assists. Helps show whether a player tends to set up perimeter or interior teammates during games.

TOV%

Turnover percentage. Estimates the percentage of turnovers a player commits per hundred possessions.

%PTS As

Percentage of a player's points that are assisted, out of his total points scored. Helps reveal certain offensive roles: for example, stationary shooters tend to have a higher assisted-points percentage than players who create off the dribble.

%PTS P

Percentage of a player's points scored in the paint, out of his total points scored. Helps reveal certain offensive roles: for example, classic post players tend to have a higher paint-points percentage than stretch bigs.

ORB%

Offensive rebound percentage. Estimates the percentage of available offensive rebounds a player grabs while on court.

STL%

Steal percentage. Estimates the percentage of opponent possessions that end in a steal by the player while he is on court.

DRB%

Defensive rebound percentage. Estimates the percentage of available defensive rebounds a player grabs while on court.

TRB%

Rebound percentage. Estimates the percentage of available rebounds a player grabs while on court.

3P%

Three-point percentage.

%3P As

Percentage of a player's made three-pointers that are assisted, out of his total made three-pointers. Shows how many of a player's threes come off a teammate's prior assist, helping to reveal whether a player tends to shoot more off the catch or off the dribble from three.

Corner three-point percentage.

BLK%

Block percentage. Estimates the percentage of opponent field goal attempts (excluding three-pointers) a player blocks while on court.

FG%

Field goal percentage.

eFG%

Effective field goal percentage. Effective field goal percentage adjusts field goal percentage to account for the fact that three-pointers are worth three points, while all other field goals are worth two.

FT%

Free throw percentage.

TS%

True shooting percentage. True shooting percentage is a shooting measure adjusted for three-pointers and free throws, and it captures a player's overall scoring efficiency.

PS%

Field goal percentage in the paint.

USG%

Usage percentage. Estimates the percentage of his team's possessions a player ends (via a field goal attempt, free throw attempt, or turnover) while he is on court.

Per 100 possessions

A stat (points, assists, etc.) divided by team possessions and multiplied by 100.

Per 24 minutes

A stat (points, assists, etc.) divided by minutes played and multiplied by 24.

AST

Assists.

As 3P

Assists on three-pointers. The number of assists a player gives that end in a three-pointer made by a teammate.

As 3P Cnr

Assists on corner three-pointers. The number of assists a player gives that end in a corner three-pointer made by a teammate.

As FG Pt

Assists on paint shots. The number of assists a player gives that end in a shot made in the paint by a teammate.

Clutch

Refers to events that occur during a game's final two minutes (in the fourth quarter or any potential overtime) when the score margin between the two teams is 5 points or fewer.

Four Factors

The Four Factors is a term coined by Dean Oliver (author of the book Basketball on Paper) in his search for the statistical factors most closely tied to winning basketball games. Oliver found that a basketball team was more likely to win a game if, in this order, it: a) shot more effectively; b) turned the ball over less; c) rebounded better than its opponent; d) got to the free throw line more often.

Tm FG% Net

Net difference between a team's field goal percentage while the player is on court, excluding the player's own shots, and the team's field goal percentage while the player is on the bench. Helps show whether a player's presence, apart from his own scoring, improves his team's efficiency — whether because he's a strong playmaker or because his presence draws the defense and opens up better shots for teammates.

Team field goal percentage while the player is on the bench.

Tm FG% On

Team field goal percentage while the player is on court, excluding the player's own shots.

DRtg

Defensive Rating. Calculates the points a player or team allows per hundred possessions.

PF

Personal fouls committed.

PFD

Personal fouls drawn.

MIN

Minutes played.

Net Off

Net difference between points scored by the team and points scored by the opponent while the player is on the bench, adjusted to a hundred possessions. Answers the question: in absolute terms, does the player's team tend to outscore its opponent while he is on the bench?

Net On

Net difference between points scored by the team and points scored by the opponent while the player is on court, adjusted to a hundred possessions. Answers the question: in absolute terms, does the player's team tend to outscore its opponent while he is on court?

Net PTS G

Net points generated. The net difference between the number of points a player generates through his assists and the number of points he gives up to the opposing team through his turnovers.

NRtg

Net Rating. The net difference between Offensive Rating and Defensive Rating (ORtg - DRtg).

On/Off

Net difference between Net On and Net Off. Helps show, in absolute terms, a player's real impact on his team when he is on court versus when he is not. Calculated as (Net On - Net Off). For example, if a player has a Net On of +10 (his team outscores its opponent by 10 points per hundred possessions while he's on court) and a Net Off of -5 (his team is outscored by 5 points per hundred possessions while he's on the bench), his On/Off will be +15.

Opp FG% Net

Net difference between the opposing team's field goal percentage while the player is on court and while he is on the bench. Helps show whether a player's presence generally improves his team's defense and hurts the opponent's offense.

Opp FG% Off

Opposing team's field goal percentage while the player is on the bench.

Opp FG% On

Opposing team's field goal percentage while the player is on court.

Opp FG% Pt Net

Net difference between the opposing team's field goal percentage in the paint while the player is on court and while he is on the bench. Helps show whether a player's presence generally lowers the opponent's scoring efficiency in the paint, reflecting his interior defensive impact beyond traditional stats like blocks.

Opp FG% Pt Off

Opposing team's field goal percentage in the paint while the player is on the bench.

Opp FG% Pt On

Opposing team's field goal percentage in the paint while the player is on court.

ORtg

Offensive Rating. Calculates the points a player or team scores per hundred possessions.

TOV

Turnovers.

Play-by-Play

Play-by-play statistics. Play-by-play offers deeper stats than the classic points, rebounds, or assists by tracking data by quarter or by event. For example, the number of a team's turnovers that lead directly to opponent points on the ensuing possession.

Points.

PTS As

Assisted points. The number of points a player scores that come from a teammate's assist.

PTS Giv

Points given up. The number of points a player gives up to the opposing team through his turnovers, accounting for shot type (two-point, three-point, free throw).

PTS Giv/TO

Points given up per turnover. The number of points a player gives up to the opposing team for each turnover he commits.

PTS G

Points generated. The number of points a player generates through his assists, accounting for shot type (two-point, three-point, free throw).

PTS G/As

Points generated per assist. The number of points a player generates for his team per assist. Players with a Points Generated/Assist of 2.50+ tend to create more for perimeter players, while those below 2.50 tend to set up interior teammates more often.

PTS G OR

Points generated via offensive rebounds. The number of points a player generates through his offensive rebounds, giving his team second-chance opportunities, accounting for shot type (two-point, three-point, free throw).

PTS G/OR

Points generated per offensive rebound. The number of points a player generates for his team per offensive rebound grabbed.

PTS Gen Stl

Points generated via steals. The number of points a player generates through his steals, accounting for shot type (two-point, three-point, free throw).

PTS Gen/Stl

Points generated per steal. The number of points a player generates for his team per steal.

Tm PTS Off

Points scored by the team while the player is on the bench, adjusted to a hundred possessions.

Tm PTS On

Points scored by the team while the player is on court, adjusted to a hundred possessions.

Opp PTS Off

Points scored by the opponent while the player is on the bench, adjusted to a hundred possessions.

Opp PTS On

Points scored by the opponent while the player is on court, adjusted to a hundred possessions.

Points scored in the paint.

Pace

Pace is an estimate of the number of possessions a team uses over 40 minutes.

Three-point attempt rate. The percentage of a player's field goal attempts that are three-pointers.

FTr

Free throw attempt rate. The percentage of free throws a player shoots relative to his field goal attempts.

Assisted three-pointers. The number of made three-pointers that come from a teammate's prior assist.

Ratio of free throws made to field goals attempted. Measures how often a team gets to the free throw line relative to its total field goal attempts.

PS As

Assisted paint shots. The number of shots made in the paint by a player that come from a teammate's prior assist.

PSM

Field goals made in the paint.

PSA

Field goals attempted in the paint.

WS

Win Shares. Win Shares is an advanced stat that aims to estimate a player's individual contribution to his team's success in terms of wins. It is calculated using the player's own stats, his team's stats, and league-wide averages to estimate a player's offensive and defensive contribution to his team's wins. Generally, the sum of a team's players' Win Shares will land close to that team's total wins.

WS/40

Win Shares per 40 minutes. Estimates the number of wins a player contributes to his team per 40 minutes. See Win Shares for more information.

PIR

Efficiency (PIR). Introduced by the ACB in 1991 and widely used across several European leagues, this stat aggregates a player's positive and negative on-court contributions into a single estimated performance index. It is calculated with the formula (Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks + Fouls Drawn) - (Missed Field Goals + Missed Free Throws + Turnovers + Fouls Committed). It does not adjust for a team's pace of play. Note: historically, the ACB has also subtracted shots blocked (received) in the formula. Since DBasket considers blocked shots already accounted for within missed shots, it does not include this figure.
